a boston woso Glossary
AO: American Outlaws, a US National Team supporters group.
_
AO BOSTON: The Boston chapter of the American Outlaws.
_
CAPO: A really outgoing person who leads the chants and songs in the supporters section during the match (and sometimes at parties.). It’s a huge honor but also a big responsibility to be Capo.
There will be an application process to be capo for our home matches, and we plan to have a rotation of capos for 2026.
_
DRAWDOWN: A brewery very close to White Stadium, on Washington Street in Jamaica Plain.
We often pop up there to watch sports and talk soccer.
_
FO: Front Office. When we say we “met with FO”, we mean we met with staff from the team in their official capacity as team representatives.
_
FURT: Not Fort, Furt. It’s a long story but- the word furt is symbolic of the various marketing gaffes that the NWSL made during its early years.
_
HAVING AN OKAY TIME: See: 'HAVING AN OKAY TIME' with Kristie Mewis | Snacks
_
ISA: Independent Supporters Association. (See also: SG)
_
OFFSIDE: One of the least understood rules of the game of soccer (laws of the game of football, for the purists) We really are very happy to explain it to anyone who is unsure.
Summary: if someone scores a goal - look quickly to see if there is a flag up on either side of the sideline. That means the play was ruled offside, and the goal will not count.
_
PARLOR: Parlor Sports Bar. A super fun sport’s type bar with a love for soccer and a full bar/food menu. We go there to watch soccer a lot. Located on Beacon Street in Somerville.
_
THE REBELLION: The New England Rebellion Independent Supporters Association. They support the New England Revolution. Founded in 2009, the Rebellion are a 501(c)(7) organization.
_
THE REVS: The New England Revolution. A men’s professional soccer team, playing in the MLS league. Their home field is just outside the city, in Foxboro, MA. (Seriously though, Go Revs!)
_
THE RIDERS: The Midnight Riders Independent Supporters Association. They support the New England Revolution. Founded in 1995, the Midnight Riders are a 501(c)(3) and a 501(c)(7) organization.
_
SG: Supporters Group. Another common name for an organized group of fans.
_
STH: Season Ticket Holder.
_
TIFO: Typically, this is referring to the big banner that supporters groups display just before the start of a match but it generally means any choreographed visual display from the fans. They are fun to come up with, organize and make - but they are very expensive. Tifos only get used once so, in this league, they are usually reserved for special games.
_
ULA: A cafe between the Orange Line Stony Brook stop and White Stadium. Great coffee and food. We sometimes have board and committee meetings there. Great ownership and staff. Try the sandwiches!
_
VAR: Video Assistant Referee. Basically, it’s a 5th official and two assistants manning a video replay system to identify “clear and obvious” errors made by the on-field referee.
The NWSL posted a good summary that explains when the on-field referee might get a call from “upstairs” and when VAR will always be consulted. Love it or hate it, NWSL uses VAR for all regular season and playoff matches.
